Mission
statement
To
create
the Communities of Resistance Centre, an education and
information resource accessible to local communities
in Newham and surrounding boroughs, that will provide
both an unique archive documenting the history and changing
experiences of black people resisting racism in east
London and a authoritative reference library of information
on race, crime and policing issues,
Aims
and objectives
NMP
Anti-Racist Trust seeks to develop a new educational
and information resource centre based within the
London Borough of Newham, with the following aims:
- To
collect and catalogue over 30 years of photographs,
printed materials and oral testimony that illustrate
the experiences of black communities settling in Newham
and surrounding boroughs and the means by which our
communities resisted the racism they faced.
- To
ensure that this material is available to schools,
universities, researchers and the general public in
an accessible form, so that this history and experience
is not lost.
- To
develop a specialist reference library that brings
together the latest information on race, crime and
policing issues.
In
order to achieve these objectives, the Trust seeks to:
- Bring
together photographs and printed information
held by those who have played an active part in resisting
racism in east London over the years, including those
who have been involved in Newham Monitoring Project
and other anti-racist organisations.
- Set
up a library service that will act as a respected
point of reference for those seeking to know more
about the changing social, legal and policy responses
to racism, crime and policing in Britain
- Open
an accessible resource centre, the Communities
of Resistance Centre, as a home for the collection
and for the library.
- Develop
an Oral History project that interviews local
people and captures their experiences of facing and
overcoming racism.
- Set
up a digital community archive accessible via
the Internet
- Prepare
and stage exhibitions that can highlight aspects
of the experiences of new communities in east London,
with particular emphasis on work with schools.
